Bob Dylan, who had been seriously thinking about retirement at one point, was revived on the Never Ending Tour from 1988, when his activities got stuck during the seemingly glamorous tour with Tom Petty. History proves that he has embarked on a more aggressive live performance with the acquisition of the best guitarist, GE Smith. The three years from 1988 to 1990 can be said to be the time when Dylan made a wonderful rebirth in a quartet with Smith.
The total settlement for the last three years, or the peak, was from January to February 1990. Dylan and the band, who got off to a great start with the legendary public rehearsal gig "TOAD'S PLACE 1990" released by ZION, performed wonderful stages every day. The high evaluation of the album "OH MERCY" released in the fall of the previous year should surely have been a tailwind. This momentum culminated as the tour moved to the French and British journeys.
"FROM GRAND REX TO HAMMER SMITH" was a coupling of a famous sound source and a famous performance on the last day of the tour with Paris at this time when it was the peak of several times on the tour when GE Smith was enrolled. It was recorded there on February 8th, which was the Chiakigaku performance of Hammersmith Odeon 6 nights in a row in London. Certainly, the performance of this day has firmly established its reputation as the best show at the time of GE Smith's enrollment, and it is known as a prestigious day with several items released in the past.
However, considering that all of the Hammersmith Odeon 6 performances were wonderful and were praised by the British media at that time, it is strange that Hammersmith and other days' items were hardly released. The rest is the situation that there are only items like "CRITIC'S CHOICE VOL. 1 & 2" which was edited by the nostalgic Wanted Man (by the way, the label founder died in January) on the 5th and 6th. .. It's true that the show on the 8th is outstanding, but the quality of the performance is generally high on other days, so I wonder if the sound sources of other days will also be itemized. This feeling must have been common to Dylan enthusiasts all over the world. However, this is the first release since "FROM GRAND ~", and yet the release of the sound source of the show other than the 8th will finally be realized!
